Koalas are facing an uphill battle for survival, with habitat becoming increasingly fragmented from through residential development and bushfires making food sources harder to find. Unfortunately, this means that they often fall victim to incidents with vehicles and domestic pets

Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue, or SKER, is a registered charity run by fully trained, professional carers and a team of passionate volunteers. SKER work closely with other rescuers, sanctuaries, CFS, specialist vets and government bodies in South Australia and nationally.

Mish Simpson, pictured with the AWC team, is the Director of SKER. Mish and her husband Wade recently purchased a 22 acre property in Southern Adelaide with the vision to transform part of the property into a state of the art, purpose built animal Rehabilitation Centre. Mish runs the centre with the help of volunteers who provide 24/7 care to the animals at the Centre.

The Centre includes a triage area, indoor and outdoor hospital facilities, outdoor 'gunyah’s' for koalas in long term care, plus enclosures for other native wildlife that come into care. SKER also offer offer specialised care, community education and rescue services.

SKER's centre is also ecologically self-sufficient, powered by solar panels/batteries and with water supplies through rain capture and bore water.

The construction of the first sustainable Koala food plantations has also commenced on the site, with ~1750 trees having been planted to date.

The hard work of SKER is an inspiration to our next collection - which will feature one of various animals to which SKER dedicate their rescue efforts.
